Information

375… but we need more!

Age Concern Canterbury works with older people to change their lives for the better. This valuable work would be impossible without our 375 wonderful volunteers.

We need all kinds of help and volunteers to offer their time and skills. Their contributions range from practical tasks, like driving a minibus to providing companionship through regular weekly visits to a lonely older person.

All volunteers have an orientation and if necessary training. We provide ongoing support sessions to keep in touch and we are always there to help. We need new volunteers now, so do contact us today.

Examples

Visiting Service
Val visits Jack (84) once a week. Jack finds it hard to get out much now so he looks forward to Val’s visits. “Jack is a real character with a lot of stories to tell,” Val chuckles. “He can sometimes feel down, but we have a good chat and we always end up laughing. I always go away feeling cheerful and I think he does too.”

Minibus Outings
John drives the minibus for a monthly outing. “It’s only one afternoon a month, so it doesn’t take up too much of my time. I really enjoy chatting to all the people and making sure they are happy and enjoying themselves. My passengers decide where they would like to go and each trip is different.”

Information Centre
Margaret has mastered the computer and gets great satisfaction from providing information and support as she takes charge of the information desk on Friday afternoons. “I didn’t really see myself using a computer, but I’ve had plenty of training so I really feel confident now,” says Margaret proudly. “I’ve gained a new skill and it’s great to be able to help all the people who phone in for information.”
